Our Mission Statement

We strive to live out our faith with love and compassion by thought, word and deed, within the congregation and the wider community. We did so by encouraging spiritual exploration and growth, working toward justice in the world, honoring diversity, and learning to embrace a spirit of abundance.

There are seven principles which Unitarian Universalist congregations affirm and promote:

• The inherent worth and dignity of every person;
• Justice, equity and compassion in human relations;
• Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations;
• A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;
• The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large;
• The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all;
• Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.

What to expect at Sunday service

Our services lift up and celebrate a diverse range of theological belief- texts used in worship include not only the bible but also the texts of the worlds religions, poetry that touches upon deep truths, and even the teachings of the earth itself.

The format of the service is often that of a typical Protestant service and includes:

• Call to Worship
• Hymns
• Choral Introit and Anthem
• Children's Focus
• Candles of Joy and Concern (when the community shares the joys and sorrows of their week)
• Prayer and Meditation
• Offertory (with special music)
• Sermon

We do occasionally stray from this format and venture into more creative territory: we have had music services, services that incorporate dance, earth centered ritual, services focused on making prayer flags, and more. Music
is a critical part of our worship, and we are so lucky to have talented musicians and an exuberant choir. Our minister leads worship every Sunday but one per month. The remaining Sundays, worship is led by our gifted lay Worship Associates. Attire ranges from suits and ties to blue jeans and tee-shirts. We will joyfully welcome you as you are!

Our church's history in brief

In 1819, people in Lewiston, Minot, Danville who were interested in Universalist ideas founded the Christian Society Library. Nineteen years later, in 1838, they organized themselves into the First Universalist Church at Lewiston Falls. They erected a church building on HIgh Street in Auburn (then part of Minot) which was finished the following year. The edifice served local Universalists until the early 1870s when they decided to build the present church, completed in 1876. In 1939, extensive renovations were made to the church sanctuary. After the merger of the Universalist and Unitarian denominations in 1962, the church officially became known as the First Universalist Church, Unitarian Universalist. Major alterations to the building were completed in 1964. In 2002, an addition was built to make the church building handicap accessible.
