Candidate must be organized, yet creative and flexible. Must have experience with children, and knowledge of UU principles.  Candidate should be comfortable with diversity, and be able to work with people of diverse views.  Candidate should be willing to work up to 20 hours per week, and make a long-range commitment to this position.  Candidate should be a communicative team player, and act as a resource to volunteer classroom teachers.  Request a job description for specific duties.

DRE Job Description

 

      Sunday Duties

á     Be present at church from 9 to 11:30 on Sundays with four (4) Sundays off during the RE year (September through June 30).  Sundays off should be scheduled two (2) weeks in advance with the minister and substitutes should be named.

á     Be in the sanctuary during service and go to the altar during the children's focus. Prepare and lead

the children's worship service or facilitate another leader for this work with the minister and

RE Committee Chair to coordinate the curriculum and activities. 

á     Facilitate child care during the Sunday service.

 

á     Instructional Planning

á     Work with the RE Committee Chair to recruit and train teachers.  Maintain weekly contact with the scheduled team for the week, to make sure they have what they need and are clear as to their responsibilities.  Have the classrooms ready with materials set out each Sunday. 

á     Training should include mandated reporting of child abuse.

á     Read and distribute REACH packets.

á     Be a resource person for teachers, developing and supplementing the curriculum.

á     Coordinate special events, including fundraising and community outreach, and participate in church youth activities.

 

Administration

á     Prepare and monitor the RE budget, purchase supplies, register students, and maintain records and files.

á     Organize and maintain supplies.

á     Ensure the safety of classroom and activity spaces.  Hold regular fire drills.

á     Maintain a system for background checks on volunteers.

 

á     Communication- Institutional

á     Have at least quarterly contact with the Northeast New England District RE Director and Consultant.

á     Help coordinate Our Whole Lives sexuality program, as needed, often a shared responsibility with

other congregations.

á     Participate in UU training sessions to maintain knowledge of current and new RE materials.

á     Recommend changes tot he RE Committee.

á     Meet with the minister monthly.

á     Meet with the RE Committee/Chair monthly.

á     Participate in Council of Committee meetings once per quarter (4 times per year).

á     Attend one scheduled governing board meeting each year and report on the RE program.

 

Communication- Congregational

á     Keep hours at church when the church office is open, and publish those hours on the newsletter.

á     Maintain contact with whole families with children in RE, throughout the year.

á     Contact families of former or prospective students to encourage participation in the RE program. 

á     Work though any special needs or discipline problems with students, parents and teachers, with consultation from the minister.

á     Write a monthly column for the church newsletter, and place information on the back page of the weekly Order of Service.

á     Promote the church school program in the local community by supplying information to the Community Relations committee.

á     Supply a report on Religious Education to be included in the Annual Report for the Annual Church meeting.
